Old Man Boogie

The Reverend Peyton, Breezy, & CuzFather’s Day and all I got was this crummy radio show.
Asked for a genuine, custom made something anything, but there you go.
You bitter?
Yeah. Bit him, too.

Let’s get this show on the road with “My Old Man Boogie” from The Reverend Peyton & His Big Damn Band. Merle Haggard singing about “Daddy Frank” is so absolutely devoid of irony and completely sincere that you might want to keep an eye on pops for fear he’ll turn that new tie around and cinch it up tight.

Slaid Cleaves‘ new “Still Fighting The War” project yielded a paternal gem and a half called “Welding Burns.” And when Amy Lashley sings about “Old Man Don” being too cheap to turn up the heat and yellin’ at the kids to remember to jiggle the handle…now, don’t that sound familiar?

A couple Shel Silverstein compositions. One from Johnny Cash. One from Bobby Bare Jr. and his daughter. Wayne Scott singing about spending “Sunday With My Son.” Waylon is the “Only Daddy That’ll Walk The Line.” Riders In The Sky do real justice to that Gene Autry classic “That Silver-Haired Daddy of Mine.”

John Hartford, James Brown, Elvis, Bob Wills, Loretta Lynn, The Deep Fried Pickle Project, Jerry Douglas, The Gibson Brothers, Whitley & Skaggs, and Norman Blake round it on out for us is style. Dad’ll dig it. Promise.

Crazy…

Of course there’s good crazy and bad crazy, we all know that.
This week on the ol’ Redbud Radio we’ll grab us a passing glance at where we’re at in our spirit and in our mind. A song can do that for a person. Whether it’s James Hand singing an authentic country song that speaks to abject loneliness or Forest Sun optimistically recognizing that new day before us for the opportunity it is.

And rather than drive you and myself even crazier (you know dang well we’re already there), I’m going to dispense with the blah blah blah and provide a quick overview of who you can expect to hear in this here program:

Jerry Garcia On The Pedal Steel

garciaOne of the most prolific, and downright interesting, phases of Jerry Garcia‘s musical career was the period in which he took up the pedal steel guitar. He immersed himself in the instrument in 1969 and put it down, with the exception of a few live appearances during a Dylan and The Dead tour in the late 80s, completely in 1974.

In that relatively short period of time, he contributed some fine pedal steel work to Grateful Dead releases such as “Workingman’s Dead” and “American Beauty,” as well as his first solo project. And it was a certain session on said instrument backing CrosbyStillsNash, & Young that garnered the most attention.

We’ll have a pretty fair sampling of his session work tonight, everyone from Link WrayPaul PenaJefferson Airplace, to Brewer & Shipley of “One Toke Over The Line” fame. And you’d better know we plan to include the legendary band that Jerry teamed-up with John “Marmaduke” Dawson to form, in large part, as a vehicle for Jerry’s pedal steel playing, The New Riders of the Purple Sage.

Rain In The Darkness

Laura CorteseJust one of those hours of radio inspired by a mood one rainy night in April, Redbuddies.

Have always marveled at how dark songs that plumb the depths of human emotion can make one feel better. Being no stranger to bluegrass songs in which two people rarely love one another at the same time might be a factor.

Imagine that knowing you ain’t alone when you hear someone else expressing their blues is another. That shared human condition deal.

Walking into the darkness with your arms wide open, as Rose Cousins suggests, seems to help more than hurt, as well.

Here’s the setlist:

1. Ane Brun “Lullaby For Grown-ups” (Live)
2. Ben Harper “I Ride At Dawn”
3. Tim Eriksen “Careless Love”
4. Gurf Morlix “Empty Cup”
5. Rose Cousins “The Darkness”
6. James McMurtry ” I Only Want To Talk To You”
7. Morphine “You Look Like Rain” (Live)
8. Los Lobos “Wicked Rain”
9. Peter Rowan “Doc Watson Morning”
10. Laura Cortese “For Catherine”
11. Curtis Mayfield “Move On Up”
12. Bruce Cockburn “The End of All Rivers”
13. John Reischman “Little Maggie”
14. John Gorka “A Fond Kiss”
15. Richard Shindell “Last Fare of the Day”
16. Nick Drake “Tow The Line”

Reasons to listen…

THIS WEEK ON REDBUD RADIO:

James Brown

James Brown

Sure, you got your not-so-witty banter (of cohosts T-Bone Mathley & Cary Allen Fields). GREAT musical guests regularly dropping by for a visit. And we all appreciate how community-focused, independent radio provides hope when it’s so tough to find good music on that FM dial nowadays.  Truth is, it’s the SONGS that make Redbud Radio the eclectic, diverse, accessible program that it is. It’s fun to listen to, and that’s why so many people look forward to tuning in each week.

Cars, Trees, Sobriety and MORE!

THIS WEEK ON REDBUD RADIO:

1951HotRodLincolnCommander Cody and his Lost Planet Airman recorded their version  of “Hot Rod Lincoln”  in 1972 but the Charlie Ryan-penned original was actually an answer song written in response to Arkie Shibley and his Mountain Dew Boys 1951 hit “Hot Rod Race.”

And another downright iconic gear-headed glorification in the form of a hymn of praise to the Oldsmobile Rocket 88 will be coming up fast on the heels of that model A, I’d say.  We all know that Jackie Brenton & His Delta Cats were really Ike Turner’s Kings of Rhythm, right? Sam Phillips was convinced that was the first rock and roll song (it was recorded at his Sun Studios in Memphis), though opinions differ.

From car culture to tall trees. Cahalen Morrison & Eli WestThe Louvin Brothers, and Mark Knopfler‘s “Redbud Tree” from his “Privateering” project will help us create some biomass to offset all that CO2 them cars cranked out.

Mark Knopfler

Mark Knopfler

Sam CookeRay Wylie Hubbard, and The Band all reside comfortably within a set that’ll make perfect sense when you hear it. Same goes for a certain song from Rosie Flores‘ new “Working Girl’s Guitar” being followed by a certain Byrds number. Explanations just ruin the surprise.

rosie

A sobriety set, seven songs strong, will take it out for us. You might not think cautionary tales about the trouble that follows in the wake of alcohol consumption would exactly spell fun, but you’d be wrong.  Think Loretta Lynn and her admonition to not come home a-drinkin’ with lovin’ on your mind, or Junior Brown telling us why he hung it up, that kinda thing. Merle Haggard and Willie NelsonAnnie LouNew American FarmersThe Seldom Scene, and a crowd-pleasing tome of some renown from Keller Williams & The Traveling McCourys.
